Temples as School Field Trip and Tourist Destinations

The last 24 days, Holi Festival notwithstanding, have been a very busy time for Academic Outreach. Caru Das made 12 classroom presentations to a total of 2,040 High School Students and an additional 424 students along with teachers and some parents, toured the temple on 2 - 3 hour school field trips.

Temple Tours included lunch, kirtan, power point presentation, yoga, short video, in one case a Bharat Natyam workshop, and animal (cows, parrots, and llamas) handling.

Classroom presentations included power points, kirtan, and some cooking demonstrations.

We believe that every temple, however, could and should have an external sign inviting visitors in for a tour during certain hours of the day. We have proposed this a couple of times at NA Temple Presidents and GBC meetings.

While on a recent visit to Chowpatty temple, Caru Das was asked by Jagannatha Kirtan Das to take him on an imaginary tour of Spanish Fork temple. The following is a transcript of that interview, kindly provided by JK, who says the gist of the tour has been nicely implemented in Mumbai. Because both Chowpatty and Spanish Fork are Rajastani style temples there is a fair bit in the beginning on that type of architecture. Skipping over this part down to the 'Changing Bodies' section, just about everything thence could be implemented at any temple worldwide.

Real Broad-Mindedness?

Prabhupada explained that there are different levels of broad-mindedness. Someone thinks of the country, someone thinks of humanity, someone of ecology. Now there are some people that are very concerned about the green house effect that's endangering the whole world. They are concerned with a kind of much broader; you can say almost the universal welfare of whole humanity or the whole planet. There are even people who are concerned about species which are endangered or in extinction.

We saw a TV special, some people in Africa, who are so concerned about hundreds and thousands of wild beasts that were being killed due to mismanagement in Botswana; but on the TV they were saying how they couldn't wait to get back home and have a nice shrimp dinner. What about the poor shrimp? They want to crawl around the bottom of the ocean too, just as much as the wild beasts want to run around on the field.

Srila Prabhupada explained how a Krishna Consciousness person sees the soul of everything: how actually the Lord is the Father , the Origin, the Absolute Truth, and the basis of everything. So they try to work for the welfare of the whole universe without any kind of prejudice or distinction or glory.

KARMA: Mouth of a TIGER!

Srila Prabhupada explains that when a tiger deals with it's own cubs, it picks them up with its mouth just like you see the cat lift up the kitten. But that lifting with the mouth is filled with motherly affection moving them from one place to the other.

But when the tiger jumps on the prey whether it's a deer, zebra or whatever, it might be that it bites them with its mouth. But that is totally a different bite. So the law of Karma is like the tiger on the prey, like the cat on the mouse.

But when you take shelter of Krishna then what appears to be Karma is actually Krishna personally taking charge of the devotee. It is like the cat or the tiger taking the cub, the kid, by the mouth, simply for purification, for our remembrance.

So whether we want to be under the care of Krishna or under the care of the illusory energy and the stringent lat of Karma, that's up to us to decide. When we are under the care of Krishna and we do devotional service, we feel very blissful. We just have to be a little careful. We have to go on learning and trying to practice responsibly, remaining humble. We have to be aware of what mistakes we are making and try to correct them, because we are responsible for them.

HED: A longer, really nice newsletter, from PSD, Battlefield Bhajans is at: http://www.jayarama.us/archives/bb.txt

GURU TATTVA
http://www.jayarama.us/archives/guru-tattwa.txt

Many people responded to the comments about the regulative principles in the last HED. It was amazing how people took it in so many different ways.

We had exchange of letters with Prema Vikash Prabhu and he comments that in his centers in Australia he is very strict on the point of Mangala Arati for himself and those under his authority.

From one former secretary of H. H. Jayapataka Swami we learned of Maharaja's standard. Even if up until very late taking care of disciples, and now dealing with sever health issues, Maharaja still wakes up by 4AM 90% of the time and even if he can't go to the Temple because of needs of the body he chants Gurvastakam in his rooms.

Also, as many may have seen questions about illicit sex for candidates for Second Initiation in Maharaja's survey for Second Initiation and may have understood this to mean that illicit sex is allowed after second initiation, there is clarification that this is a Survey and doesn't mean that Maharaja is giving Second Initiation to those who are not following.

There were many other responses from disciples and leaders but basically it seems clear to us that everyone agrees we have to chant 16 nice rounds, follow the 4 principles strictly and rise early for Managala Arati to be following Srila Prabhupada's standard for initiated disciples, but certainly one can also be a demon and following the external principles. There has to be some idea of love and personal feeling there. Also, Karma-yoga, doing whatever you can do for Krsna, nicely , not dog-hard, and then engaging in the regulative principles of hearing and chanting as much as you can, is the actual level for most of us. Actually this is the standard Arjuna himself presents in the BG, no?

Karma-yoga is Yoga and it leads to Sadhana Bhakti Yoga for us.

Prabhupada comments in one purport that one should not be too concerned about other peoples religious practices because this will only make the mind restless. One should focus more on his own standard. So, give the discussion a rest and work on your own advancement.

Srinivasa Palepu,
Hope all is fine at your end. The following lines in this newsletter really impressed me and I felt that you will also like it, hence forwarding to you:

Trinidad is the only country I know where the Muslims celebrate the feast of the martyrdom of Hossein, a member of the family of Mohammed and they come out to the streets in procession singing hymns (Kuwalis). The Hindus lend their tassa drums to this event. A ride in the countryside leads us through rice-fields and sugar-cane plantations where Hindu and Muslim temples adding their color to the countryside exotic in the tropical sunlight. Catholics celebrate the Hindu feast of Diwali adding lights to the steps and doorways of their homes.
Now, that is Inter-faith harmony!

ABC (Amerikan Bhagavata Curriculum)
Mahendra and Yadu Swami, here in Radha-desa, guessed the other song. It is Narada Muni Bhajai Vina… in Canto Six. But Mother Ananga in Peru pointed out that Sarira Avidya jale… is also a song.

SAR is on Canto Six, but most of our focus is on Canto One, getting ready for the trip to Russia. That’s also the focus, of the focus, of the folks in the current revision of our manuscript for our book, Minding Monkey. Notice the parallel between the discussion of Maharaja Pariksit and Sukadeva Goswami in the first text of Nectar of Instruction and the beginning of Nectar of Devotion? It is all from Canto Six, the story of Ajamila and what is sin? Got it straight? Still compelled to act against your will? We are. Read it again, Text One of NOI, NOD and SB 6.1-3 .

We try to keep this HED/NASA short so that the Blue Baboon doesn’t go crazy translating them. Considering the wages we pay we’re lucky he does it at all.

A lot more stuff is happening, Vedas, Sattwa, Minding Monkey, Travel to India, but this is some of it. Abhirama is finishing printing LOB. It is so beautiful. The VEDAS Ramnavami Festival was complete success. Juan, Jose, Caitanya and the Beltran took first initiation as Jayananda, Jagat-pavitram, Caitanya-candrodaya and Bharata Das! The Patraka took second initiation! The LOB movie is done with its new Sound Track. Oscar is going MAD bringing the Manipuri Troupe to Peru. We are still just taking Hanuman fruit, milk and nut (steamed vegetable) prasadam. 25-rounds a day. We feel lighter. Getting ready to die! Monkey’s last Dairy went to M. Yugala, Ananga, Rohini and the Laksmana. http://www.jayarama.us/archives/dtc.doc
We’ll post the new Calendar and Contact info on the Website. Internet seem good here at the College. We go to Spain the 2nd of May. Our current e-mail is Jayarama108-kishkindha@yahoo.com.
We are caught-up on the mail until 11 April. Maybe some new photos at http://www.photos.jayarama.us/

ISKCON Scholar Greets Pope on Behalf Of US Hindus

By ISKCON News Staff

Radhika Raman Dasa (Dr. Ravi Gupta) exchanges greetings with the Pope on behalf of the Hindu Community in North America.

Washington, D.C.-Dr. Ravi Gupta, a professor of Hinduism at William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia, and an initiated brahmana priest of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), presented a gift of an elaborate OM symbol to Pope Benedict XVI at an interfaith gathering in Washington, D.C., on behalf of the Hindu American community on Thursday, April 17.

The Pope, the spiritual leader of the Roman Catholic Church including 65 million Americans, is in Washington as part of a North American tour that will include an address later in the week to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The interfaith meeting where Dr. Gupta met the Pope was organized by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and was held at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington. Approximately one hundred and fifty interfaith leaders attended the session, including representatives from the Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain traditions.

"It was a great honor to meet His Holiness Pope Benedict on behalf of the Hindu community in America," said Dr. Gupta. "I was impressed by the intimacy of the gathering, and the Pope's genuine interest in meeting with us. It was my feeling that the Pope-as both a holy man and a scholar-wished he had more time to spend with his guests, and to be able to know us all better," Gupta said.

The meeting, entitled "Peace Our Hope-An Interreligious Gathering with His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI" concluded a diverse and event-filled day for the pontiff including his celebrating Mass in the local sports stadium with 45,000 adherents and Washington elite.

Dr. Gupta, 26, whose devotional name is Radhika Raman Dasa, was one of five young representatives of religious traditions who were invited to greet the Pope and offer him a gift from their respective traditions. Anuttama Dasa, ISKCON's Minister of Communications and a Governing Body Commissioner (GBC), also attended the private event on behalf of the Hare Krishna society.

Due to tight security, attendees to the interfaith gathering were ushered into their meeting room two hours before the Pope. The Pontiff arrived at the John Paul II Center just after 6 PM in his 'Pope Mobile' escorted by security vehicles and limousines carrying an entourage of cardinals, bishops and priests.

The Pope Mobile approaches the John Paul II Center in Washington, D.C., where the head of the Roman Catholic Church will meet with religious leaders from five faiths, including ISKCON's Dr. Ravi Gupta.

After brief welcoming remarks, the Pope spoke for twenty minutes on the importance of interfaith dialogue and cooperation. He quoted former President Franklin Roosevelt who said, "No greater thing could come to our land today than a revival of the spirit of faith."

The Pope invited the group to bear "witness to those moral truths which they hold in common with all men and women of goodwill" and thus, as religious people "exert a positive influence on the wider culture."

After speaking, the Pope stepped down from his elevated seat to greet his visitors more intimately, beginning with the youth representatives. Just minutes before he was to offer his gift to the Pope, Dr. Gupta, dressed in traditional dhoti, kurta, and tilak, was told he was welcome to also share some personal words with the Holy Fathe.

"I greeted the Pope with our traditional Hare Krishna greeting," reported Gupta. "Then I said, 'Your Holiness, you are well aware of the richness within Hinduism, including a strong tradition of monotheism and religious tolerance. I hope these can be a foundation for a strong and continued dialogue with the [Catholic] Church."

The Pope responded positively, "Yes, our dialogue should continue to grow," accepted the OM symbol, and held Dr. Gupta's hand warmly before the next representative came forward.

"It was a historical occasion," said Anuttama Dasa, ISKCON GBC Member. "The tensions on the world stage call for religious leaders to understand each other better and to teach their respective congregations to not only respect, but to learn from one another. The Pope, while careful to not minimize his own tradition's values and faith commitments, opened the door wider for increased cooperation with the Church."

Both Gupta and Dasa are also in Washington this week to attend the 11th Annual Vaishnava-Christian dialogue, which coincided with the Pope's visit.

Padam Padam Yad Vipadam...

When a bumblebee enters the opening of a lotus flower and drinks its honey, it is fully protected by the petals of the lotus. The bee is undisturbed by sunshine and other external influences. Similarly, one who always seeks shelter at the lotus feet of the personality of Godhead is protected from all dangers. It is therefore said in Srimad-Bhagavatam (10.14.58):

samasrita ye pada-pallava-plavam
mahat-padam punya-yaso murareh
bhavambudhir vatsa-padam param padam
padam padam yad vipadam na tesam

For one who has taken shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord, everything becomes easier. Indeed, even crossing the great ocean of nescience (bhavambudhi) is exactly like crossing the hoofprint created by a calf (vatsa-padam). For such a devotee, there is no question of remaining in a place where every step is dangerous.

Salagram Silas Abhisek - Rama Navami Festival 2008

According to the Gautamiya Tantra, "a stone from any place other than the Gandaki River in Nepal can never be a Salagrama Sila." In Sri Hari-bhakti-vilas it is stated, "merely by touching a genuine Salagram Sila one becomes free from the sins of millions of births, so what to speak of worshiping Him. By puja of Salagrama Sila one gains the direct association of Lord Hari." The Skanda Purana states that, "a genuine Salagram Sila is directly a manifestation of the Supreme Lord Visnu and does not require any installation."

It is further stated that, "the sale or purchase of a Salagram Sila is strictly prohibited. Anyone who attempts to determine the material value of a Salagrama Sila will live in hell until the end of the universe. The area within a radius of twenty-four miles from where a Salagrama Sila is worshiped is considered a holy place (tirtha). Anyone who sees, bathes, worships, or bows to a Salagrama Sila will receive the same piety as doing millions of sacrifices andgiving millions of cows in charity."

"Without having accumulated pious activities, it is very difficult to find a Salagrama Sila in this world, especially in the age of Kali-yuga." In the Padma Purana it is stated, "if a devotee who is properly initiated in prescribed mantras does the puja of Salagrama Sila, he will attain the Supreme Lord's spiritual abode without a doubt."

Sri Shalagram Sila is manifest externally as a water-tumbled stone; therefore Shalagram Silas may be said to be gems. The word "gem" is used for any fine quality stone, pearl or coral that is rare, attractive, portable, durable, valuable, and powerful; in the case of Shalagram Sila the ruling Deity is Lord Hari, also known as Sri Narayana Bhagavan.

Because a Shalagram Sila is ruled by Bhagavan, Who is greater than the sum total of ALL the universes (mahat-tattva), therefore the 'material' worth of a real Shalagram Sila is beyond calculation and impossible to measure. Buying/selling a Shalagram Sila is considered a sinful offense; receiving a gift of a genuine Shalagram Shila from a qualified Hari-bhakta is the only way to properly obtain such a priceless and spiritual (and material) treasure.

A normal fine quality planetary gem, like a ruby or pearl, needs only an initial invocation to begin ownership; but a Sri Shalagram Sila must be worshiped daily with certain paraphernalia such as Tulasi leaves, Ganga-jala, fruit and water, etc. Puja is offered to Shalagram Sila according to the desire of Paramatma within the heart of the devotee. Sri Shalagram Sila ALWAYS controls his Own worship from within the heart of His sevak.

Science and Scientist - Bhaktivedanta Institute Newsletter

Inquiring into the Origin of Matter and Life
January-March 2008

Bhaktivedanata Institute's latest quarterly newsletter is now available online.

You can download the January-March 2008 issue from: http://scienceandscientist.org/current.php

_________________________________________________

What's it about?

Modern science has generally been directed toward investigating the material world, excluding consideration of the conscious scientist who is essential to the whole process, since, of course, the very existence of the scientific endeavor itself depends upon consciousness. Complete scientific knowledge must consequently include both objective science and subjective consciousness.

In addition to other programs, Bhaktivedanta Institute's Science and Scientist Newsletter is humbly offered to inspire scientists and scholars to contribute their sincere efforts toward developing this grand synthesis. The result will be valuable not only for helping to better understand the "hard" problems of science such as the nature and origin of life and the cosmos, the mind-brain connection, artificial intelligence, etc. But the pressing problems of ethics in science, world peace, and interfaith dialog will also benefit from a more inclusive scientific worldview.

In our modern era science and religion are the predominating influences determining the fate of mankind. Promoting and developing a culture of harmony between such diverse fields has the potential to expand our conception of reality and advance human knowledge in the new millennium, in which it is said the study of life will be pre-eminent. Let us welcome the dawn of that new epoch with great hope and determined endeavor.

Wandering Miscreants
4 April - Hare Krsna! AGTSP! Paoho. Here we are in the Internet Center near our Ashrama in Choseeka. It was an old machine shop and a bending-brake and a spot-welder sit next to us. Pretty good Internet connection. Thirty-five cents per hour.

Our health is pretty good. Right now Abhirama Prabhu has printed all the pages for all 2,000 copies of the LOB! Jaya! Next, cutting, sowing, cover etc. Seems like everything is on schedule.

We just stop every now and then and chant Hare Krsna. It clears our head and our heart.

We encounter so many things in life, no?? In Sankirtana.

Japa is our only Sankirtana partner!

Calendar/Contact US
Details constantly updated at the Web-page

1) We got a ticket to India ! ! !
Nashville/Newark to Delhi on the 15th of September, returning on the 6th of December. Jiva Goswami Das bought the seat next to us...

What are your plans, tickets? We are fixing things little by little each day. Maybe go to Manipur?? Probably stay in Vrndavana for all of Karitka and then go to Mayapura after that. Krsna!!!

2) Until the 16 April we are here in Peru. Trip to Ecuador was post-poned.

Then Radha-desa until 2nd May. Spain until 9th May then...
... Russia, Spain, USA (NIOS, Houston, Mexico, Boise, SJC???) etc.

Is O.K?

Mostly we are just planning to chant and write, dance, and honor Krsna's prasadam (if we can get it).

American Bhagavata Curriculum
RCA-dog.bmp
Some fools say that Prabhupada is dead. Another class of fools are still getting directions from him every day.

We have been giving more Rupa-siksa Seminars. It has been very nice here in Peru. All the classes. Association of devotees. We couldn’t get beyond the song in the Preface to the Nectar of Instruction – “Gauranga bolite habe….” We all memorized it and it keeps coming to our lips again and again.

It is one of the only two songs I have ever seen in Prabhupada’s purports. What is the other one?? Do you know? Five points! Where is it??

Today, for example, for one hour we read David Haberman’s Introduction to his translation of the Bhakti-rasamrta- sindhu. That is for preparation for our course at Radha Desa. So interesting. The history of Rasa Sastras in India.

We have been in the Internet Center for three hours. We have been answering letters, but still we are 28 behind with some as old as 18 March.

Next we will go to the Temple with the Patraka. Its five more minutes down the road. Then Gaura arati and we continue with a SAR Seminar. We are on 5th Canto this month. We have been reading the Instructions of Rsabadeva to His Sons. Prabhupada quotes 5.5.5 in the Nectar of Instruction.

Then, tonight, before we go to bed we will read another Act from Lalita Madhava. Krsna has just saved Candravali from suicide! We all owe so much to Kusakratha. Maybe he has saved a lot of us from suicide.
Do you really want to go to Vrndavana? And never find your way back??

KINDERGARTEN: Still just fruit, milk and nuts. Even that requires care and adjustment. 25 rounds a day! Mangala arati.

SANKIRTANA: Was able to walk to the Dragon Fans Internet Center each morning and work from 5:30 to 6:30AM on Minding Monkey. Each HED we post the latest editing at:
www.JayaRama. US/archives/ mindingmonkey. doc
Sinhali has just asked Trijata to borrow her copy of the NOI with all her foot-notes etc. That’s on the Web also.
www.JayaRama. US/archives/ asa-noi.doc

This way we can feed two parrots with one hand, writing Minding Monkey and Rupa-siksa. That has been really satisfying, annotating the Nectar of Instruction. I hope we can continue to make steady progress on that.
Then we die a peaceful death.

Well I guess that’s enough ABC. Monkey still is sending out his Diarys. The last one went to M. Candra-mukhi and the Patraka. The next one…? Could be you!
Srinivasa has already booked his Kartika Diary. That should be a hum dinger!

Summarys and extracts from Piggy always at:
www.jayarama- us/archives/ asa-noi.doc

O.K. Letters to and from the Editator and well finishing writing this HED tommorrow. Hare Krsna!!! Hare Krsna!!!!
Chant this song, And we are always heart to heart as we walk along.
Hare Krsna! Hare Krsna!

TOMMORROW 5 April
4:30PM Been here since 3PM. Lots of letters to and from Russia about the course.

Our diet is really getting refined. Patraka is helping a lot. Gave a Master's class on David Haberman this morning from 9 to 10:30. Our heart is really crying for Vrndavana!

How much longer can we stay here.

Hmm!!!

Vedas report 3-3-08
Dear Maharaj.

Paoho, AGTSP and you!!!!
Editator - A few to HpS. See Guru Tattwa below. Vedas is fired up. Now is preparing The Rama navami Festival. If everything goes as planned, it’ll be great.

We are editing a booklet, better quality now, full color, sponsored by Alas Peruanas University. M. Rohini and M. Ananga are doing this with the valuable help of Candra muki dd. They are also planning a drama-dance performance. There’ll be an spectacular monkey army, a dramatic fight between Ravana and Lord Rama, Hanumatpresaka pastime, Hanuman giving the ring to Sita devi. More fights with Viracandra and his troupè. Couple of lovely dances. Great decoration and of course lots of prasadam.

Vedas is becoming what they wanted, a solid educative option for ISKCON.

Right after this festival, we are planning to give some courses, under the guidance of our mentor HH Hanumatpresaka Swami.

We want to please him, please Prabhupada and all the devotees. We want to make Prabhupada and his ISKCON famous.

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to do something for him.
Your servants,
V.E.D.A.S

EDITATOR: Very interesting. In meeting the following day we met with VEDAS and one of the best conclusions is that they are enthusiastic to get the Bhakti Sastri certificate going in Peru, BUT, a Peruvian Bhakti Sastri. A Bh S with sentiment!!!

EDITATOR: This is a letter from Jaga Mohan in Madrid. Such a nice devotee. Such a nice saint. They have 40 to 50 to 80 people coming every day for the lunch buffet.
Very nice collection. Some always stay after and then there are more programs. Such a nice program. Visit them in Madrid!!!

M. Jambavati with many other devotees just finished distributing 1000 books in last
Sankirtana tour in Mexico. She says that its
true. You can find Vrndvana at the lotus fet of the Spiritual Master. Like so many devotees she has done so much street sankirtana that she can't really even walk any more. The pads on her feet are worn out. How much Krsna must love such people.

Ananda vardhana Prabhu, the light of Chile with Narottama, Abhaya, all the crew are
making 1,000 cookies a month for sankirtana!

O.K. This is the Hot Issue for this HED.

We are Madhyama Adhikari. We are properly following an Uttama Adhikari Guru and giving names and beads and making the contract on his order.

If you accept us as guru you must accept Srila Prabhupada as your Acharya.

3) All this is from the NOI. We must chant 16 nice rounds a day and follow the 4 principles strictly, rise by 1-1/2 hours before sunrise, offer some Mangala arati, perform Kirtana and then read Srimad Bhagavatam, and then engage in Sankirtana in Srila Prabhupada's ISKCON.

4) This means we have to have a practical relationship with ISKCON and the GBC. To our understanding the GBC is the Ultimate Administrative Authority in ISKCON and under them we have specific authorities. This is administration, ksatriya, side. The brahminical side is idealized by the Sannyasis. And in general, anybody can be good association and a guru. That's the real purpose of ISKCON, to get good association.

5) First duty of GBC is to set proper example and see that people are getting up for Mangala Arati and coming to class etc. Administration becomes easy then. Sannyasis should also not renounce Mangala Arati.

Comment - But GBC, Temple Presidents, even Sannyasis are not coming to Mangala Arati more and more.

Answer - So we have to preach to them, take proper action. If you are not satisfied with one GBC answer, then you can go to another, and another, the whole GBC Body and then Prabhupada. Its administration, like any institution. Don't expect things to be too intimate.

That is more Brahminical and Devotee relations.

6) Comment - Some Gurus allow their Grhastha disciples to Fornicate for Fun once a month. Is that allowed? Can I do that??

Answer - We have personal experience of hearing this from pretty reliable sources. It is not allowed for Initiated devotees. Only sexual relations after Garbhadana Samskara etc. Discuss it with your Father, not a Sannyasi.

As we understand the confusion maybe that if one falls from the Grhastha standard then the Diksa guru is no longer acting as Diksa guru, but if he feels that the devotee is sincere then he will continue to act as Vartmana pradarshika Guru, Siksa guru, who gives us advice how to get back to the standard path, but without establishing that relation with him as Diksa guru again, you can't expect to advance in spiritual life.

Comment - My guru is very advanced and Srila Prabhupada gave him secret instructions that he doesn't mention in his books about these fundamental points such as illicit sex.

Answer - We can understand that there are many lines of devotees behind Srila Prabhupada. Our line is bona fide to the best of our comprehension. Maybe the most insignificant. So there are differences. Get a guru. Get a connection to an Acharya such as Srila Prabhupada some how or other.

We remember that Prabhupda writes, that the Acharya does not give instructions in secret. He gives them in public where every one can hear. Of course there are details.

7) What is the standard for second initiation?

Answer - The same as first initiation but more strict. At least one year following after first iniation. You don't have to take second initiation to go back to Goloka if you follow Hari Nama vow properly.

It is for Brahmana, Ksatriya, Vaisya. Now you must act like a good example of a Lady or Gentlemen. Your Ashrama must be clear. You must dress and act like a Brahmacari, Grhastha etc. Then life can be very nice.

Back Home Back to Godhead.

Question - We have more questions.

Answer - We will try to write more precisely on this for our Vyasapuja Offering in the next few days and then also communicate with our Godbrothers on these topics.

Especially Mangala arati, Morning Program and Sex in the Grhastha Ashrama are topics that we need to clarify. We feel that these things are becoming institutionalized in ISKCON and that will be the absolute end of everything.

Comment - Good Luck.

Uncle Gismo - We are still studying Sanskrita.

Heaven Vs Original Spiritual World?

Usually the concept in religious books of different religions is that heaven is a place where there is a lot of enjoyment. Quran talks about the various types of sense gratification you can enjoy. The Mormons consider heaven to be a place to get back together with your family and then live there forever after. Family members are happy and there is no suffering and everyone is basically God conscious.

But this concept of heaven fits in with the upper planetary systems in the (material) universe, where people are pious entities who follow the laws of God, and they have good material sense gratification.

But according to the Vedas, one doesn't stay there eternally. One comes down from there, from those planets and is forced to maybe take birth in the human form of life or as an animal, according to their Karmas. One can be on the heavenly planets for thousands or millions of years of our calculation, so one thinks one is there for a very long time but in terms of eternal time it's a drop in the bucket, so to speak. It's just a small period of time, which quickly passes by.

So, the real goal of life is to go back to Godhead, back to the original Spiritual Kingdom of God. But in the Spiritual Kingdom of God, there is no material sense gratification. Everything is in relationship to the service of the Lord.

That means, as long as one is thinking about their personal sense gratification, as long as that is their goal of life, namely how to make their own bodies happy, they are forced to come again in the material world.

The Many Colors of Hinduism

Revelers celebrate the springtime with clouds of chalk in Spanish Fork

Published: Sunday, March 30, 2008 1:35 a.m. MDT

A fusion of colors exploded on the east side of the majestic white Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork Saturday evening as thousands celebrated the Festival of Colors, one of the most important Hindu holidays of the year.

To rejoice in the coming of spring and the victory of good over evil, natives of India, Hindus, Utah County residents and BYU students chucked bags of purple, green, pink, yellow, blue and silver chalk at each other.

"It was really intense," said Cristine Vallone, who moved to Provo nine months ago. "You couldn't breathe at all, but it was really fun though. It was just a blinding mess of color."

For 15 minutes the crowd was lost in a pink-tinged cloud after people began to toss colors.

The throwing of the colors "is to signify that people are the same," said Marish Bansal, a native of India. "Nobody is bigger or smaller. We are all children of God."

This symbolism of unity takes place after burning the effigy of an evil demoness, which represents the victory of good over evil. The religious meaning of the festival runs deep for Hindus.

The festival "is a very big part of the religion," said Rajnikant Shalma, a Hindu from India. "It's good for friendship. Even if you are enemies on that day you are friends."

Story continues below

Shalma has been in the U.S. for seven months and is studying to get his Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering at BYU. In his native Jaipur, Shalma said he and his friends would gather and go to their neighbors' houses to put color on them but said he likes "the idea of everyone gathering at the temple" for the celebration.

Inside the upper room of the temple the religious side of the festival is more visible. On the south wall stands a miniature temple carved of wood with statues of Hindu gods inside. There members of the faith worship, bowing their heads and placing red paint on the center of their foreheads.

Heather Yates and husband David joined in the worship, although Yates said they didn't totally understand the meaning of it.

"I think it's really beautiful," Yates, a BYU student, said. "They were just worshipping at the shrine and you could tell it was really important for them. I think it is awesome that they are so open in allowing people to worship with them."

Another important expression of worship at the festival is dancing. An Indian woman with her hair plaited in a long tight braid moves deftly across the stage. She steps carefully with red-painted feet in time to the chiming of the music. Her red-tinged fingers flair fanlike and move swiftly to take another shape.

Dancer Puja Allepalli's movements are a prayer to God Krishna asking him to extend his mercy to his worshippers.

Allepalli is a native of India, who lives in Denver, and has been dancing since she was 4. This is her first year at the festival of colors in Spanish Fork.

"I was so excited to be here because in Denver there are not any holy celebrations," Allepalli said. "This is just like being back in India; people with color all over their faces and people rejoicing in the true spirit."

SPANISH FORK, Utah -- It's one of the most unusual events in Utah - the Holi Festival in Spanish Fork. It has an intensely Hindu message, but has largely Mormon attendance. The festival was held at the Krishna Temple Saturday. Fox 13's Max Roth has the story.
